Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) are an organisation that often looks into smoking habits and social trends. Their latest report looks into the increased use of electronic cigarettes in the UK amongst tobacco users, non smokers and minors.
This year’s findings are pretty much the same across the board and it all shows that the use of electronic cigarettes is on the increase. In fact amongst smokers in the UK we have seen an increase of 4% in the numbers of people who use them – rising from 7% to 11%. Of course we seen the use of electronic cigarettes rise consistently but not often in such a short time frame – great news for the electronic cigarette industry.
What the report also shows is that there is only a very small number of non-smokers that use them, not many under 18s use them on a regular basis and virtual no-one under the age of 16. Which could be surprising results as many people who are against electronic cigarettes have campaigned in the past because they say that electronic cigarettes could encourage teenagers to take up the habit.
Of course as a whole the electronic cigarette industry like CloudCig always welcome the legal enforcement of banning sales of e cigarettes to under 18s but it is nice to see evidence to back up the fact that this being bought in is not as urgent as some bodies would have you believe.
What Else The Report Looked At
The report was quite extensive and it didn’t just look at the way we use electronic cigarettes. It also looked at the use of them and how healthy they are. The report concluded “Most of the diseases associated with smoking are caused by inhaling smoke which contains thousands of toxic chemicals. By contrast, nicotine is relatively safe.”
As such ASH have summarised that they do not feel it is necessary for electronic cigarettes to be put under the same laws and rules as traditional tobacco cigarettes. For example, there is no reason why these should not be allowed to be smoked indoors unlike tobacco cigarettes.
This is fantastic because it means that there is no need for places to ban these from being smoked on their premises. We have seen many places ban these simply because they look like normal cigarettes so this is certainly a boost in the corner for allowing these to be smoked wherever.
